I am finding this a very powerful and enlightening book. Diane is making so much sense, beginning with the role of self deception in abuse. This deception is hard to spot; for the abuser it acts as a narcotic. Groups deceive themselves especially when a victim exposes a truth that is uncomfortable. Churches deceive themselves because believing the truth is too painful.

The book is definitely aimed at those in the church with power eg the ordained. The middle section goes through how power is abused, especially in the church. I found this section less helpful because it was so rooted in Scripture rather than secular research. The final two chapters are a discussion of how Jesus used power and contrasted that with what the church is doing. The latter 2 sections are probably less helpful for us because they are designed to reach those who wield power in the church but they do suggest a way for church leaders to repent!
