Book review
The Hawk and the Dove
I planned to read the first book, but as it is now printed as a trilogy I became intrigued and continued reading. The books were easy to read, in places humorous, and I wanted to know how the story developed.
It begins with a mother telling her teenaged daughter stories about an ancestor who was a monk and became an Abbot. The stories told how he dealt with his own difficulties and those of his community and novices. One feels one really gets to know each character and how each one learns to love and receive God’s grace in different ways.
The last book, The Long Fall is straight narrative. It is very powerful and moving, about the end of life and bereavement.
I can thoroughly recommend the Trilogy. It contains much food for thought as a Christian.
“In a moment of decision, they will each face the truth of their own heart in God’s presence. This masterful look into a bygone era reminds us that Christians of every age have faced the same basic struggles: how to worship God in spirit and truth and to love our neighbours as ourselves.”
